A groundbreaking solution to the problem of induction, based on Ayn Rand’s theory of concepts.

Inspired by and expanding on a series of lectures presented by Leonard Peikoff, David Harriman presents a fascinating answer to the problem of induction-the epistemological question of how we can know the truth of inductive generalizations.

Ayn Rand presented her revolutionary theory of concepts in her book Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology. As Dr. Peikoff subsequently explored the concept of induction, he sought out David Harriman, a physicist who had taught philosophy, for his expert knowledge of the scientific discovery process.

Here, Harriman presents the result of a collaboration between scientist and philosopher. Beginning with a detailed discussion of the role of mathematics and experimentation in validating generalizations in physics-looking closely at the reasoning of scientists such as Galileo, Kepler, Newton, Lavoisier, and Maxwell-Harriman skillfully argues that the inductive method used in philosophy is in principle indistinguishable from the method used in physics.

Review:

David Kelley succeeded in writing not only a philosophically rigorous logic textbook, but, more importantly, [one that is] accessible to students. — Vincente Medina, Seton Hall University

Excellent. I have used The Art of Reasoning many times and recommended it to many colleagues, several of whom used it as well. I find this book vastly superior to the multitude of other texts available for this course. — Aeon Skoble, Southeast Missouri State University

An inviting alternative to traditional texts in introductory logic, The Art of Reasoning is widely acclaimed for its conversational tone and accessible exposition of rigorous logical concepts.

The Third Edition has been meticulously updated and continues the successful pedagogical approach of the two previous editions, guiding students through the fundamental elements of formal deductive logic, classification and definition, fallacies, basic argument analysis, inductive generalization, statistical reasoning, and explanation.

“Although this book is written for the educated generalist or layperson and the college student, it should be read by everyone—especially by journalists and politicians. Hopefully, it will be adopted as a textbook both here and abroad with foreign editions and translations. Bernstein’s seminal work is a triumph in the crusade for freedom and individual rights. We certainly need more books like this.”—Ed Younkins, Professor of Accountancy, Wheeling Jesuit University

The Capitalist Manifesto defends capitalism as the world’s most moral and practical social system. This book is written for the rational mind, whether the reader is a professional intellectual or an intelligent layman. It makes the case for individual rights and freedom in terms intelligible to all rational men.
