Summary

First published as a pamphlet in June 1850, The Law is already well over 150 years old, and it will still be read when another century has passed.

America now faces the same situation France did in 1848 and the same socialist-communist plans and ideas adopted there are now sweeping America—the collapse of Communism in Eastern Europe notwithstanding. Bastiat’s explanation of and arguments against socialism are as valid today as they were when written, and his ideas deserve serious consideration.

“Socialism, like the ancient ideas from which it springs, confuses the distinction between government and society. As a result of this, every time we object to a thing being done by government, the socialists conclude that we object to its being done at all. We disapprove of state education. Then the socialists say that we are opposed to any education. We object to a state religion. Then the socialists say that we want no religion at all. We object to a state-enforced equality. Then they say that we are against equality. And so on, and so on. It is as if the socialists were to accuse us of not wanting persons to eat because we do not want the state to raise grain.”—Frédéric Bastiat

Summary

Published in 1922 during those dark and dreary years of socialism’s near-complete triumph, Socialism stunned the socialist world. Mises has given us a profoundly important treatise that assaults socialism in all its guises, a work that discusses every major aspect of socialism and leaves no stone unturned. A few of the numerous topics discussed include the success of socialist ideas; life under socialism: art and literature, science and journalism; economic calculation under socialism; the ideal of equality; and Marx’s theory of monopolies.

With this monumental work, Mises laid the foundations for free society. Socialism has influenced scores of influential thinkers, including Friedrich Hayek, Ayn Rand, and Milton Friedman. It is read over and over again today, all over the world, inspiring throngs of new defenders of freedom. © 1981 by Margit von Mises

Review Quotes

“This book must rank as the most devastating analysis of socialism yet penned…An economic classic in our time.” –  Henry Hazlitt

Summary

“Ideas are the greatest and most crucially practical power on earth,” wrote Ayn Rand. In the title essay of this collection, Leonard Peikoff applies this principle to the world of business. He shows that certain philosophic ideas, such as reason, egoism, and individualism, are needed to defend and protect the freedom of businessmen, while the opposite ideas, such as mysticism, altruism, and collectivism (which dominate our universities), destroy that freedom. Other essays in this volume will help businessmen understand the crucial role of philosophy in free trade, free markets, health care, and business ethics.

Why Businessmen Need Philosophy is important reading for any businessman who wants to defend his freedom—and anyone else who wants to understand and defend business.

Review Quotes

“These essays, some of which are written by Rand herself, provide an excellent introduction to the best and most original aspects of Rand’s thought…One really thoughtful essay traces the origins of the idea of antitrust legislation, and tries to show how it went wrong. There is also a carefully documented history of how moneylending has suffered from moralists throughout the centuries…It is refreshing, after this long period in which bankers or capitalists have been blamed for the collapse of the financial system, and many of society’s ills, to take a dose of this unashamedly egotistical and self-glorifying rhetoric.”—New York Journal of Books

LEONARD PEIKOFF is universally recognized as the preeminent Rand scholar writing today. He worked closely with Ayn Rand for thirty years and was designated by her as heir to her estate. He has taught philosophy at Hunter College, Long Island University, and New York University and lectures on Rand’s philosophy throughout the country. He lives in Southern California.

DESCRIPTION:

Subtitle: The Shortest and Surest Way to Understand Basic Economics

Called by H.L. Mencken, “one of the few economists in history who could really write,” Henry Hazlitt achieved lasting fame for this brilliant but concise work. In it, he explains basic truths about economics and the economic fallacies responsible for unemployment, inflation, high taxes, and recession. Covering considerable ground, Hazlitt illustrates the destructive effects of taxes, rent and price controls, inflation, trade restrictions and minimum wage laws. And, he writes about key classical liberal thinkers like John Locke, Adam Smith, Thomas Jefferson, John Stuart Mill, Alexis de Tocqueville and Herbert Spencer.

REVIEWS:

“Hazlitt was a remarkably lucid writer, and this short book is justly regarded as a classic….But it comes across even better in Jeff Riggenbach’s interpretation. Riggenbach has a knack for making routine discursive sentences come alive…he could be a college professor lecturing, the kind of lecturer who really can teach. He sounds reasonable, engaging and thoroughly likeable.”—AudioFile

“If there were a Nobel Prize for clear economic thinking, Mr. Hazlitt’s book would be a worthy recipient….like a surgeon’s scalpel, it cuts through…much nonsense that has been written in recent years about our economic ailments.”—J.W. Hanes (former Undersecretary of the Treasury)

HENRY HAZLITT (1894-1993), was a libertarian philosopher, an economist, and a journalist for the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and Newsweek, among other publications. He was the founding vice-president of the Foundation for Economic Education and an early editor of The Freeman magazine. He wrote several books and is most well known for his book Economics in One Lesson.

DESCRIPTION:

The Giants of Political Thought Series

Common Sense examines how Americans defended the right to resist unjust laws and how this right of resistance was transformed into a right of revolution. It examines Thomas Paine’s views on the difference between society and government, his defense of republican government, his total rejection of hereditary monarchy, and his belief that Americans should take up arms against the English government.

The Declaration of Independence articulates the principles of the American Revolution. This program discusses natural rights, government by consent, the social contract, the difference between alienable and inalienable rights, and the right of revolution against oppressive governments.

The Giants of Political Thought Series offers an easy and entertaining way to broaden your mind and your awareness of great ideas.

DESCRIPTION

First published in 1776, this work is the classic statement of economic liberalism or the policy of laissez-faire. Several fundamental principles or “axioms” were introduced in this work, including the division of labor, supply-and-demand, and free market capitalism as some of the most obvious. Smith’s political economy is primarily individualistic: self-interest is the incentive for economic action. However, he shows that universal pursuit of self-interest contributes to the public interest, a concept probably best encapsulated by John F. Kennedy when he remarked, “a rising tide raises all boats.”

REVIEWS

“Edwards enunciates with unusual clarity, which helps with a book published in 1776.”—Talking Book Review

ADAM SMITH was born in a small village in Kirkcaldy, Scotland in 1723. He entered the University of Glasgow at age fourteen, and later attended Balliol College at Oxford. After lecturing for a period, he held several teaching positions at Glasgow University. His greatest achievement was writing The Wealth of Nations (1776), a five-book series that sought to expose the true causes of prosperity, and installed him as the father of contemporary economic thought. He died in Edinburgh on July 19, 1790.
