HISTORY:

We the Living was published in Italian and later made into a two-part film: Noi Vivi in 1937 and Addio Kira in 1942. Directed by Goffredo Alessandrini for Scalera Films of Rome, Alida Valli starred as Kira, Fosco Giachetti as Andrei, and Rossano Brazzi as Leo.

The films were almost censored by Mussolini’s government, but were permitted because the story was set in the Soviet Union and was directly critical of that regime. Although the films were a success, people understood that the message was as much a denunciation of fascism as of communism, so the films were pulled from theaters when the German Nazis and the Italian Fascists concluded that the movies were indeed anti-fascist and anti-communist.

The films were rediscovered in the 1960’s through the efforts of Rand’s lawyers, Erika Holzer and Henry Mark Holzer, and were re-edited into a new version with English subtitles composed by Erika Holzer and co-producer Duncan Scott. It was approved by Rand and her estate and re-released as We the Living in 1986.

This download includes the extra content which is also available on the DVD.

Additional DescriptionMore Details

“Ideas are the greatest and most crucially practical power on earth,” wrote Ayn Rand. In the title essay of this collection, Leonard Peikoff applies this principle to the world of business. He shows that certain philosophic ideas, such as reason, egoism, and individualism, are needed to defend and protect the freedom of businessmen, while the opposite ideas, such as mysticism, altruism, and collectivism (which dominate our universities), destroy that freedom. Other essays in this volume will help businessmen understand the crucial role of philosophy in free trade, free markets, health care, and business ethics.

LEONARD PEIKOFF is universally recognized as the preeminent Rand scholar writing today. He worked closely with Ayn Rand for thirty years and was designated by her as heir to her estate. He has taught philosophy at Hunter College, Long Island University, and New York University and lectures on Rand’s philosophy throughout the country. He lives in Southern California.

DESCRIPTION

Les Miserables is a romantic novel packed with revealing incidents of slum life and poverty in nineteenth-century France. The core of the book deals with Jean Valjean, a criminal who serves as an example of the misery and contradictions of society with which Victor Hugo was especially concerned. Les Miserables is both a powerful social document and an extremely interesting and dramatic narrative, which is the culmination of fourteen years of work and is Hugo’s masterpiece.

REVIEWS:

“When I was 15, I was completely bowled over by Les Miserables. All my life long I have continually been discovering fresh aspects of Hugo’s genius.”-Andre Maurois

Additional DescriptionMore Details

The provocative title of Ayn Rand’s The Virtue of Selfishness introduces an equally provocative thesis about ethics. Traditional ethics has always been suspicious of self-interest, praising acts that are selfless in intent and calling amoral or immoral acts that are motivated by self interest. Ayn Rand’s view is exactly the opposite.

This collection of nineteen essays is an effective summary of Ayn Rand’s philosophy, which holds the value of the individual over and above that of the state or any other “collective.” The thread running through all of the essays is Rand’s definition of selfishness as “rational self-interest,” with the idea that one has the right to assure one’s own survival, to pursue happiness, and to own the fruits of one’s labor without having to sacrifice any of these to others against one’s will.

“C. M. Hébert reads with a passion and confidence that seems to personify Rand. One especially well-read passage depicts a hypothetical conversation in which she defends her views to a critic.”—AudioFile

AYN RAND (1905–1982) was born in Russia, graduated from the University of Leningrad, and came to the United States in 1926. She published her first novel in 1936. With the publication of The Fountainhead in 1943, she achieved a spectacular and enduring success and her unique philosophy, objectivism, gained a worldwide following.
